Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme
A great opportunity for Indian students to remain in the UK for 12 months after their studies provided that you should graduated from UK higher or further education establishments in certain mathematics, physical sciences and engineering subjects with a 2.2 degree or higher.

Only those who have studied approved programmes are eligible to apply to remain under the scheme.

Basic Requirements
The basic requirements for the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme are as follows:

You must have successfully completed, with a second class honours (2.2) or higher, a recognised science or engineering degree course, Masters course or Ph.D at a UK institution of Higher or Further Education, in a subject approved by the Department for Education and Skills at either:
• A publicly funded institution of further or higher education; or
• A bona fide private education institution. You will need to have satisfactory records of enrolment and attendance.
• You need to have completed your degree, masters or PhD in the approved subject in the last 12 months;
• You must intend to work for the 12 months granted under the scheme as long as you are able to produce to the Immigration Officer, on arrival, a valid United Kingdom entry clearance.

Highlights
• You can stay in the United Kingdom for one year as a Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme participant. Any time spent outside the United Kingdom during that period will be counted as part of the year.
• You can switch into the scheme without leaving the UK from student status or return to the UK from abroad no later than one year after you have completed your course. You must intend to leave the UK at the end of one year, unless you are granted leave to stay as a work permit holder, highly skilled migrant, businessperson or innovator.
• You must have the written consent of your official sponsor to enter or remain in the United Kingdom under the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme if your approved studies, or any studies you have undertaken, were sponsored by a government or international scholarship agency; and
• You must hold a valid entry clearance for entry in this capacity unless you are a British National (Overseas), a British overseas territories citizen, a British Overseas citizen, a British protected person or a person who under the British Nationality Act 1981 is a British subject.
• You must be able to maintain and accommodate yourself and any dependants without recourse to public funds;
• The government fees are £155 for a postal application and £250 for the premium service.

Eligible Courses
The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has created a list of eligible Science and Engineering courses. Only those who have studied approved courses are eligible to stay under the scheme. The subjects highlighted as being in decline are

• Mathematics
• Engineering
• Physical sciences
• And courses have been labeled as eligible due to those subjects identified.

The eligible Subjects at each Level of Study for the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme are defined in the Joint Academic Coding System (JACS).

You can only qualify for the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme if you are studying on a Eligible programme such as a:

• First-degree programme
• Taught and research postgraduate programmes.

Not Eligible Programmes
If your programme is categorized as 'Other Undergraduate' you are not eligible regardless of the subject of your programme. This includes:

• Higher National Certificates (HNC),
• Higher National Diplomas (HND),
• Diplomas in Higher Education (Dip HE), and
• Foundation Degrees.

Eligible Joint Honours Programmes
Many degree programmes cover more than one subject, such as the 'Joint Honours' programme.

Four possible pattern are recognised:

• Single-subject;
• Balanced two-subject combination;
• Major/minor two-subject combination;
• Balanced three-subject combination.

The following joint honours programmes are eligible for the Science and Engineering Scheme:

A balanced two-subject programme is eligible if one of the components is eligible, or if both are.
A major/minor programme is eligible if the major component is eligible, or if both are.
A balanced three-subject programme is eligible if two of the components are eligible, or if all three are.

Broadly Based Subject Group Programmes
Some programmes are broadly based within a subject group, and will have a 'generic JACS code' such as F000 for Physical Sciences or H000 for Engineering.

Bachelor of Education Degree (BEd)
Integrated undergraduate programmes leading to Qualified Teacher Status usually last for four years and lead to the Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree.

Such programmes are normally one-half teacher training, and one-half subject content

One half teacher training is not eligible for the scheme.

One-half subject content. If the whole of the subject content is eligible then the programme is eligible. The subject content may lie within a single JACS Principal Subject that is eligible, or may be split across more than one.
